Taking place on a cold, barren world called Renat Chorios, a planet devoid of most life, Star Wars: Planet of Twilight features two factions fight for control over Chorios' limited resources. The Newcomers want open trade and membership with the New Republic while the native Therans oppose it, in an attempt to keep it a sanctuary from the galactic politics and neighboring star systems. But the Newcomers have invited Leia, Chief of State of the New Republic to hear them out. Leia is subsequently kidnapped after refusing membership because the Therans hold the majority on Chorios and the New Republic does not want involvement.
Luke Skywalker, joins Leia to venture to Chorios, for the planet resonates a strong presence in the Force. Not only is he attracted to it, he also in search of his lost love, Callista, who went there for the same reason. He is unaware of Leia's capture by the Newcomers as the Chorios' strong Force has a way of clouding his abilities to harness it. Brother and sister discover a world broken and suffering with war.
While Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando depart for a rescue mission, Luke finds an evil on Chorios that had been rising to await transport off the world. The evil, a long-dormant sentient life form that bleeds the life from anybody standing in its way, is threatening to thrust its disease-ridden influence over the New Republic and the rest of the Galaxy while Luke and Leia must find a way to stop it.
This is a morbid tale that shouldn't be read by the weak-hearted. However, it's an excellent read for any fan of Star Wars but also any science fiction fan. It generally has less action than most other Star Wars books, or any of the movies, but instead carries the plot forward with intense drama between Leia and her captor's assistant, Liegus as she tries to find a way to break free. There is also the interplay of Luke using his Force senses to find Callista, (and later Leia) and finds that the planet is somewhat 'alive', burying the locations of his friends. He ends up relying on his skills, rather than the Force nearly up until the end of the book. In addition, Leia gets to use her lightsaber in a duel with another Jedi, showcasing her own talents in the Force.
I highly recommend Star Wars: Planet of Twilight to all Star Wars fans and those of Barabara Hambly. Have a good read!
